Pestana Carlton Madeira Ocean Resort Hotel
Cliff-edge Atlantic theatre — saltwater pools carved into the rocks, ocean-view balconies as standard and Funchal's old town a scenic walk along the shore.
The Ocean
The hotel drops from its clifftop straight to sea-level decks where saltwater and freshwater pools sit against the breakers, with ladder access to the open Atlantic for the brave. This is the reason to book.
The Stay
Ocean-facing rooms — effectively all of them — are generous, refreshed and blessed with balconies made for sunrise coffee. Half-board dinners were better than resort average; service was warm across all three nights.
What Works
- Sea-level pool decks with direct ocean access
- Every room facing the Atlantic
- Walkable seafront path into central Funchal
- Warm, unhurried service
What Doesn't
- Architecture unmistakably of its era
- Popular pool decks fill by mid-morning

Yes.
Ocean Pearl Apartment V
“A simple self-catering perch above Funchal's seafront strip — clean, sensibly kitted out and priced for levada hikers who use a room only to sleep.”
VIP Executive Picoas Hotel
“A polished and practical Lisbon base that prioritises functionality over personality. Rooms are comfortable and the central positioning works well, but Lisbon offers stronger boutique choices for travellers seeking atmosphere or local character.”
IFC Residence
“Lujiazui living above the IFC mall — apartment space, hotel discipline and the Bund skyline delivered nightly through floor-to-ceiling glass.”
